National Apprenticeship Week 2026, celebrated the last week of April, is a nationwide movement to showcase the value of registered apprenticeships for building a stronger economy and creating pathways to careers. This workforce model is transforming the economic landscape of Florida. In Bay, Gulf, and Franklin counties, our in-demand industries are evolving rapidly. From the resurgence of advanced manufacturing and skilled trades to the expansion of healthcare, cybersecurity, and hospitality, the demand for a highly skilled workforce has never been greater.
To meet this demand, we look to Apprentice Florida, which is a powerful partnership between CareerSource Florida and its network of 21 local workforce development boards, the Florida Department of Education, and FloridaCommerce. This initiative is designed to bridge the skills gap by promoting registered apprenticeship programs that benefit our local businesses and our residents alike.
For the State of Florida, apprenticeships are an engine for economic development. They ensure that our industries remain competitive on a global scale by creating a pipeline of talent that is trained to exact industry standards. Locally, in the Panhandle, these programs are vital. They allow us to retain our talent, providing our youth and career-changers with high-wage opportunities right here at home, rather than seeing them move away for specialized training.
For employers in Bay, Gulf, and Franklin counties, registered apprenticeships allow them to build their own workforce from the ground up. These programs can increase productivity, reduce turnover rates, increase safety, and lower the cost of recruitment.
According to Apprentice Florida, the benefits to the employer’s bottom line are clear:
- Employers realize an average return on investment of $1.50 for every dollar spent on an apprenticeship program.
- Roughly 94% of apprentices stay with their employer after completing their program, drastically reducing turnover and recruitment costs.
- Customized training, allowing employers to set the curriculum. By combining on-the-job learning with related technical instruction, employers ensure your team masters the specific technologies and culture of your business.
For job seekers, apprenticeships offer a pathway to the middle class. Unlike traditional higher education, apprenticeships allow them to start earning a paycheck from day one and earn as they learn.
- Floridians can receive high-quality training and classroom instruction without the burden of student loans.
- As participants reach skill benchmarks, their wages can increase.
- Upon completion, participants receive a nationally industry-recognized credential.
