Unemployment Rate for Gulf Coast Region Decreases in February

The unemployment rate in the CareerSource Gulf Coast region (Bay, Franklin, and Gulf counties) was 3.7 percent in February 2021. This rate is 0.4 percentage point higher than the region's year ago rate of 3.3 percent. The region's February unemployment rate was 1.3 percentage points lower than the state rate of 5.0 percent. The labor force was 94,406, up 632 (+0.7) over the year. There were 3,492 unemployed residents in the region.

Bay County and Franklin County had the lowest unemployment rate (3.7 percent) in the CareerSource Gulf Coast region followed by and Gulf County (3.9 percent).

In February 2021, nonagricultural employment in the Panama City MSA was 79,400, a decrease of 1,100 jobs (-1.4 percent) over the year.

The industries gaining in jobs over the year were: trade, transportation, and utilities (+500 jobs); mining, logging, and construction (+200 jobs); and financial activities (+200 jobs).

The leisure and hospitality (-1,100 jobs); education and health services (-300 jobs); government (-300 jobs); other services (-200 jobs); and information (-100 jobs) industries lost jobs over the year. The manufacturing and business and professional services industries were unchanged over the year.

 

“Historically our unemployment rate decreases in February due to our tourism season.” said Kim Bodine, Executive Director of CareerSource Gulf Coast. “In the coming months, we can anticipate job recovery in the leisure and hospitality industry as we close out spring break and roll into summer seasons.”

Florida’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.7 percent in February2021, down 0.1 percentage point from the January rate, and up 1.4 percentage points from a year ago.  There were 474,000 jobless Floridians out of a labor force of 10,124,000.  The U.S. unemployment rate was 6.2 percent in February.
